Sleeping With Ring On

There is no right or wrong answer to this question. We believe it is completely up to you on which you decide to lean here. Engagement rings and wedding bands are surprisingly tough if you buy a quality piece however we tend to see that men’s rings are usually much tougher simply because there’s a lot less going on.

Men will likely have zero problems leaving their wedding ring on to sleep and/or shower as the metal typically will have no diamond setting.

However, on the other hand, some engagement rings and wedding bands could have an elaborate setting of many diamonds which of course will have more potential to be stressed in various ways causing a mishap (particular during sleep where you roll around).

For this reason, it is our opinion that you take off your engagement ring and wedding band before bedtime, and put it on in the morning after your shower or before you leave for the day.

Most engagement rings and wedding bands today have multiple stones, and more elaborate designs which in turn are likely sharper than a more traditional solitaire type ring so keep in that if you value your sheets and pillow cases.

Regular Cleaning and Inspections

Buildup of oil or dirt will block out the light interaction of the diamond so there’s no sense in having a beautiful diamond that’s dirty. By not cleaning the diamond you’re doing your ring a major injustice because its not displaying to it’s full potential. Cleaning your ring isn’t that hard and requires little effort on your part.

  • Mix mild dish soap and hot water in a bowl.

  • Let it sit for 10-15 minutes.

  • Gently scrub the diamond with a soft toothbrush.

  • Pat dry with a dry cloth.

  • Pro tip – Cover the drain to avoid a bigger problem!

Regular inspections by a jeweler are typically free and if any problem is noticed (a loose diamond for instance) then it’s much easier and more re-assuring that you caught the problem before you lose a diamond and not notice until later on!

Knowing When to Take it Off and When to Leave it On

Most women find it tempting to take their rings off when they wash their hands and try very hard to resist the urge. It takes some time getting adjusted to having the price of a used car on one finger.

Some brides have forgotten their diamond rings on sink tops in restaurants while taking it off to wash their hands. Certain situations can be avoided by leaving your ring on and by taking off your ring.

  • Go ring-less for a day at the beach. Swimming can reduce the size of your finger and coupled with the water, it has the potential for disaster.

  • If your ring has micro pave stones, take it off for any exercise or sporting activities. The stones can pop out.

  • Sleeping with your ring is a matter of preference however we recommend that engagement rings and wedding bands come off at night (you’ll sleep easier knowing your new favorite thing is safe!)

ring insurance

Get Your Diamond Ring Insured

Most experts highly recommend having the ring insured as soon as you buy it. Most renters or homeowner insurance policies will add the diamond ring to your existing policy with an appraisal that confirms the diamond’s value and coupled with the valuation from the jeweler.

Most men do not ask for the valuation at the point of purchase simply because they don’t know about it.
